#3 North End of the Island

This is the third installment of “Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach: A Renter’s Guide To the Islands”, which can be downloaded for FREE from our eBook library.

The North end of Estero Island is a very popular destination for those visiting Fort Myers Beach. It is home to what is commonly referred to as Times Square (though without the neon lights, skyscrapers, or huge, bustling crowds).

However, Times Square is considered the heart of Estero Island’s downtown. It is full of shops and restaurants. It features outdoor dining, street performers, restaurants and bars with live entertainment, and plenty of beautiful spots to just sit down and relax.

This area also boasts the Fort Myers Beach Sunset and Fishing Pier, the best place to watch the Gulf Coast’s astounding sunsets!

The beach on the North end of the island is the place to go if you’re looking for water sports or beach activities. There are stands to rent jet skis and waverunners, or go on parasailing adventures, dolphin cruises, and “banana boat” water raft rides all along the beach.

Some of the beach bars in this area have activities going on like, live music, beach volleyball, and other beach games for you to participate in. Boats also often pull up close to the shore and anchor for a day of fun in the sun.

As you walk down the vast beach, either North or South, you will also find plenty of soft sand if you want to just lay out and relax in the sun. The North end of the island also features some little nature trails for a quiet getaway.

If you want to be within walking distance of Times Square, but still want to enjoy the tranquility of the beach, here are a few places we suggest that are located near Times Square. You’ll have a beautiful, quiet beach, only a short walk or Trolley ride from the shopping, dining, and entertainment in Times Square.

North of Times Square:

Vacation Villas 235 – A beautifully decorated two bedroom, two bathroom 2nd floor corner condo on the North end of the Island. Two lanais: one overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and the other overlooks Bowditch Point Park, the Bay, and the Gulf.

Gateway Villa 397 – A direct beachfront condo with two bedrooms and two baths, just a short walk to Times Square shopping, dining and the many beachside activities. Amazing beach views of the Gulf of Mexico from the large wrap around balcony.

South of Times Square

#2 Explore Estero Island

Estero Island is one of the treasures of Southwest Florida. It is an island located in Lee County, on the Gulf Coast that is bordered by San Carlos Island to the north and Big Carlos Pass to the south.

The Matanzas Pass Bridge, on the northern end of the island, connects Estero Island to San Carlos Island. The Big Carlos Bridge (part of the Bonita Beach Causeway) connects the southern end of Estero Island to Black Island, which is located at the northern limit of the city of Bonita Springs.

Estero Island provides beautiful beaches along the coast, along with popular areas for boating, kayaking, canoeing and enjoying wildlife refuges.

At the southern tip, a bridge leads to Lovers Key State Park, with serene beaches and over five miles of hiking and biking trails among an abundance of wildlife.

Dolphins are frequently spotted in Estero Bay, part of the Intracoastal Waterway surrounding Estero Island. Here, you will also find an abundance of marinas and launch points for boating adventures.

You can choose to spend the day on your own boat, or enjoy sunset cruises, sightseeing cruises, and deep-sea fishing charters, which all leave from the island.

Estero Island is also home to the famous “Times Square” and fishing pier on Fort Myers Beach. This area provides an array of shopping, dining, and entertainment for the whole family.

Further North on the island, you will find nature trails, picnic tables and grills, perfect for enjoying a beach picnic and serene wildlife.

Southwest Florida is a region located along Florida’s Gulf coast, extending from south of the Tampa Bay area, west of Lake Okeechobee and mostly north of the Everglades.

Southwest Florida generally refers to the coastal geographic areas including the counties of Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Sarasota, and Manatee.

The area is world famous for its outlying barrier islands and the beautiful Gulf beaches, which lure millions of tourists to the shorelines each year. Some of these beautiful beaches include the world renowned Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach.

The beaches of Southwest Florida are some of the finest in all of Florida. This is because of their fine, white, sugar sand, gradual slopes, and gentle surf, making them some of the safest beaches in the world, and an ideal location for fun in the sun.

Visitors come from all over to enjoy the soft sand for sunning, building sand castles, beach volleyball, and many other activities.

Prior to the 20th century, Southwest Florida was a minimally developed area. It was one of the best kept secrets by some of the area’s most famous winter residents, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

Both of these men realized what a beautiful piece of paradise they had discovered, and chose to build their winter homes in Fort Myers. Decades later, around the close of the 20th century, the area began to see huge increases in the population.

Several inland cities were placed on the top 10 list of US cities in terms of population growth annually. This trend has continued into the 21st century.

In Southwest Florida, you have access to several major highways, including Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) and Interstate 75, both of which connect Southwest Florida to Tampa (to the north), and to the East Coast area of Greater Miami–Ft. Lauderdale.

The area is also home to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), which is located in South Fort Myers. This airport is one of the busiest single runway use airports in the country, and served over 7.5 million passengers in 2010.

It offers non-stop flights to various cities in Europe and Canada, in addition to at least 36 domestic U.S. city airports.
