I feel so fortunate to have become friends with Alan S. Maltz…

Recently, we started showcasing Alan’s fine art photography at our office, here on Fort Myers Beach.

All of our guests can now view Alan’s work which amazingly captures the beauty, tranquility and diversity of Southwest Florida and the Florida Landscape.

Alan’s fine art is featured in private, public and corporate collections around the world. His works have been compiled into several acclaimed books. “Florida…Beyond the Blue Horizon” (2006) was selected by Visit Florida as the Official Coffee Table Book of Florida.

He is recognized as the Official Wildlife Photographer and Official Fine Arts Photographer of Florida by The Wildlife Foundation of Florida and Visit Florida, respectively.

He recently completed his fourth large format book, “Visions of Beauty – Fort Myers, Sanibel & Beyond.”

There’s a chance you may have seen his work in the Midfield Terminal at Southwest Florida International Airport here in Fort Myers, as well!

We’re planning a public reception and larger scale display of his works on January 21, 2010.

Enjoy the Ostego Bay Marine Science Center on Fort Myers Beach

If you’re looking to have fun, and learn something too, the Ostego Bay Marine Science Center located on Fort Myers Beach…

…provides a marine science experience through interactive exhibits, aquariums, a hands-on tank, collections and displays.

There are many opportunities to see native sea life up close and personal –

During feeding time, many reclusive marine specimens come out of hiding for lunch. Touch a starfish, see a shark, learn how sea turtles hatch, and more! Feeding times vary, so it’s best to call ahead.

During the new Thursday morning workshop, “Treasures From the Sea,” visitors will discover the lifestyles of sea shells, sea urchins, sea stars, sea horses, sand dollars and much more. This two-hour program is hosted by a local conchologist and features hands-on tables, touch tank, cleaning shells and more.

Registration is required for this program.

From October to May The Marine Science Center will host the Shrimp Waterfront Guided Tour. Times are Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon from October to May. Reservations are required.

Roy Hobbs Baseball League – 2008 Dates

The Roy Hobbs Baseball League was born in March 1987. The league is a nonprofit organization that organizes baseball for adults 28 years and older. In recent years the league has varied from 8-12 teams that play a 22-24 game season, starting in June and running through November. The league emphasizes competitive play, family oriented activities, and community service. They are committed to turning the old into the young, at least at heart. Their unofficial motto is “Baseball from Tee-ball to the grave.”

The Roy Hobbs Baseball World Series is held at the Lee County Sports Complex/Hammond Stadium, 14400 Six Mile Cypress Pkwy. , Fort Myers , FL from October 26 through November 23, 2008. For more information visit www.royhobbs.com.

Second Annual Pirate Festival – 2007

Expect a non stop pirate fun weekend for the entire family! The second annual Pirate Festival will be held on Old San Carlos Blvd Friday October 5th through Monday October 8th. There is no entrance fee to attend the Pirate Festival event. Adults and children will delight in searching for buried treasure that will be worth more than $3,500. There will be games, vendors with pirate trinkets and a Professional pirate will start the events off every morning!

Sunday evening in true pirate fashion the Pirates Ball will commence. The cost to attend the Pirates Ball is $25.00 per person or $45.00 per couple. There will be a pig roast and lots of fixings on the side. All proceeds will go to the Florida’s Lions Camp for handicapped Children.

Third Annual Cardboard Boat Races 2007

The Surf Club and the Gulf Shore Grill, located at 1204 to 1270 Estero Blvd, are hosting the 3rd annual cardboard boat races on Saturday, September 29th from 10 AM until 4:30 PM. If you’ve never been to one of these events you’re in for a treat! All boats must be constructed of cardboard. Boats may be rowed, paddled or sailed. Contests will include the fastest, best looking, ugliest, Titanic, free-for-all and the last boat floating. Fort Myers Beach 2007 Sand Sculpting Festival

This is three sand sculpting competitions held simultaneously in some of the best sand for this purpose in all of North America. One competition is for professional level sand carvers who compete in two divisions; one for solos competitors and one for doubles teams of two. The second competition is for amateurs, with categories for teams of up to five persons each in Youth, Teen, Adult and Business divisions. Finally there is the Family division that allows for any number of members of a single (immediate) family.
